Kargman’s straightforward but revealingly sharp-eyed documentary focuses on the challenges facing six of the competitors [in the annual Youth America Grand Prix] in varying age brackets and from the United States and abroad. It follows them as they move through their rigorous training, perform in the semifinals and then go on to dance in the high-stakes finals in New York.

First Position is a new award-winning dance documentary… It features some of the most talented young dancers in the world as they compete for ballet scholarships that have the power to change their lives. The movie stars Michaela DePrince, Aran Bell, Miko & Jules Fogarty, Joan Sebastian Zamora, Rebecca Houseknecht and Gaya Bommer Yemini.
