This holiday season, Beauty and The Beast premiers with Northern Ballet.
This is the company’s second premier this year following Cleopatra’s debut which brought in over £1m at the box office since it premiered earlier this year in February.
Northern Ballet is know for its full-length narrative productions inspired by opera and literature. It is based in Leeds, north of London and boasts the
“largest purpose-built space for dance outside London.”
A must-see Christmas production, choreographed by David Nixon OBE, is now part of the company’s repertoire of family ballets.
Beauty and The Beast Premiers with Northern Ballet
Beauty & the Beast tells the story of a young prince who is transformed into a beast as a punishment for his arrogance and cursed to live alone in his castle until the spell is broken by the sacrifice of true love. In Beauty’s presence the Beast remembers the joy he once had and his willingness to sacrifice his life for her permits his final transformation back to a handsome Prince.
Audiences will be transported into an enchanting world of colour, inhabited by fairies, goblins and sprites, with an elaborate mirrored set from Duncan Hayler and haute couture-style costumes designed by David Nixon. The show will be accompanied by an infectious score from Saint-Säens, Bizet, Debussy and Glazunov, played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
Northern Ballet Artistic Director David Nixon OBE said: “I wanted to create a family show which would be equally popular with both children and adults alike. Beauty & the Beast is a classic fairytale of good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty on the inside and the outside.
This is not an adaptation of the Disney version of the story – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements of the tale as well as the lighter moments ’As a family ballet Beauty & the Beast follows in the footsteps of The Nutcracker, Peter Pan and A Christmas Carol…
Here’s the entire story.
Duncan Hayler’s above description of his set design for the beast’s castle and forrest is so intriguing, it draws you into the atmosphere he created and leaves you wanting to attend Beauty and The Beast premier with Northern Ballet.
