Interview with Melissa Hough and James Gotesky of the Houston Ballet

Interview with Melissa Hough and James Gotesky of the Houston BalletOver a month ago, I wrote about Houston Ballet’s new take on the ballet Cinderella. I applaud director Stanton Welch for daring to stage a more contemporary version of the ballet.

Now, Melissa Hough and James Gotesky speak about Stanton Welch’s “Cinderella” in the following interview on Public Radio KUHF in Houston.

Listen now to the recorded interview of Melissa Hough and James Gotesky.

We hear about Houston Ballet’s revival production of Cinderella, opening tomorrow night at the Wortham Center. Lead dancers, Melissa Hough and James Gotesky, describe Stanton Welch’s fresh take on the familiar story, in which “Cinderella” is more tomboy and independent woman than traditional fairy-tale princess.

Catherine Lu chats with Melissa Hough, who dances the title role, and James Gotesky, who takes on the roles of Dandini and the Evil Stepmother.

It’s a great interview and I love the picture of James as the Evil Stepmother! See the photo and listen to audio interview here.

Melissa Hough and James Gotesky speak candidly about playing their new roles.

What do you think of the male dancers playing the Stepmother and Stepsisters, in pointe? Ouch!

How do you think audiences will receive this unconventional version? What do you think of the message Stanton is trying to convey?
