How To Break-in New Pointe Shoes

Breaking-in new pointe shoes is part of the ritual of prepping your shoes for class, rehearsal and performances. So after you’ve sewn on your ribbons and elastics, pancaked your shoes, it’s time to break them in!

Here are three different ways to break-in your new ballet pointe shoes. It’s what I do, but each ballerina has her own way of breaking in her shoes. .

1. Soften your pointe shoes by standing with your heel over the box.
2. Place you pointe shoes in a door frame and pushing the door against the box of your shoe.
3. Roll your pointe shoe box and shank over a ballet barre.

You can do one of these techniques, or combine all three. It’s totally up to you.

The Video Dictionary of Classical Ballet

The Video Dictionary of Classical Ballet by Kevin McKenzie and Georgina Parkinson

"Ballet was never just a set of physical exercises or positions.
It was always a set of beliefs,
an aspiration to nobility,
an aspiration to the extraordinary,
to the 'merveilleux'.
It was a way of life. And it is today a connection to the past,
a direct connection, both to Louis [IV] and to Marie Taglioni,
and to the worlds that they lived in.
It is a living, moving history."
