Luke Jennings, journalist and dance critic for The Observer of the UK has picked his Top 10 Dances for 2011. Some of them are classical ballet works, though not all of them.
To state that 2011 has been a difficult year for the arts is putting it lightly. With many professional ballet and contemporary dance companies feeling the world recession crunch, they have been forced to be creative with their choice of programs to entice audiences to attend their performances.

Besides the usual Nutcrackers…
there was Peter and the Wolf, Beatrix Potter and her menagerie, two productions of Alice, two Beauty and the Beasts, and no less than three Cinderellas. All over the UK, highly trained dancers seemed to be putting on furry animal costumes.

Choosing the top 10 dances of 2011 was not an easy task, as the author states in his comments below his article: there were so many great works this year.
What are your top 10?
One of my favorite ballets for 2011 and it’s not on Mr. Jennings’ list, was Les Sylphides by Fokine. Chopin’s music to this ballet is absolutely breathtaking.
