As a ballerina, Anastasia Volochkova became the youngest soloist of the Mariinsky Ballet which was a first, as she was still a student there.  In 1998, she became a prima ballerina at the Bolshoi Ballet and continued to dance in numerous productions until 2003. She was let go at that time for being too tall and too heavy, then a Moscow court ruled “the Bolshoi Ballet had to reinstate Volochskova immediately and awarded her thousands of US dollars in back pay and damages.

Needless to say, she has seen her share of press and media and has experienced how difficult classical ballet can be, which is why she soon found herself under the headline: Bolshoi Ballerina Resigns Russian Party.

Bolshoi Ballerina Resigns Russian Party:

A Bolshoi ballerina who became a poster girl for Vladimir Putin’s United Russia has quit the party, saying she is fed up of her glamorous image being hijacked for dishonest political purposes.

Feeling her image had been used for solely party-line purposes, Bolshoi ballerina, Anastasia Volochkova, quit the Russian Party, after scandalous claims about recent photos of her. She had been promised by the party they would help her create school programs to promote the arts like ballet.

But she said she was leaving because the party’s rhetoric was empty talk. In particular, she complained that party officials had done nothing to help her create a network of schools to teach young children arts such as ballet.

She had also been tricked into signing a collective letter denouncing jailed oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky in 2005, she added. She said her name had been added to the signatories without her having even read it. (Full article Here.)

Claiming that what she really seeks is to be seen for her talent in her own right and to dance independently, Volochkova was known for some time as one of the most famous ballerinas as well as one of the most famous celebrities in Russia.  The Russian party did what they could to down play her leaving, but it still caused quite a stir, nonetheless.
